What Makes Helotes Unique?

  • "Helote" -  Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church for corn, is generally considered the source of the community's name. In the very early days, the area was home to the Lipan Apache tribe which relied on corn, called "helote" for food.  Each spring, when the tribe's chief declared the corn ripe, a festival was held.
  • Government Canyon Visitor Center - forms the gateway to the 8,600-acre Government Canyon State Natural Area. It includes an exhibit hall, a park store, classrooms, offices, and an outdoor pavilion. Government Canyon lies along the Balcones Escarpment on the recharge zone of the Edwards Aquifer, the sole source of drinking water for the city of San Antonio, in an area under immense development pressure. The goal of the project, a karst aquifer preserve, was to protect and restore the natural landscape while creating high-use, low-maintenance, and economical structures that reinforce the mission of the Natural Area.
  • Cornyval - a fun filled festival held each year in May honoring the traditions of the town's original inhabitants, and an event honoring the Lipan Apache tribe who celebrated each spring when the corn was ripe.
  • Marnoch House - through the years, this structure has served as a home to the Marnoch family, a stagecoach stop, and Marnoch Barn a post office.  The current owners of the property have restored it as their home and have worked extremely hard to preserve the history and charm. The barn is a recent addition but was designed to refect the era.
